Travel Massive NYC is excited to invite the community to celebrate the holidays with Intrepid Urban Adventures Tuesday, December 19th from 6:30 to 9:00 PM. Come sip and shop for those last-minute gifts in an emerging neighborhood full of artisans and independent businesses where the global day tours operator has just launched their new signature Made In tours.
Shopping on tours sucks. But Urban Adventures wants to change that. The company has launched its newest product line-up, called “Made In…,” as a way to turn the typical tourist’s shopping experience on its head. The Made In line-up is designed to be more than just a shopping tour – offering tourists not only a chance to find authentic souvenirs on their travels, but to also learn about authentic local arts, crafts, design, and more.
As a traveler, shopping in a destination often means one of two things: they’ll either be taken to touristy markets, where they’re pressured into buying mass-produced goods just so that their guide can make a commission. Or, for travelers who dare to venture into shops on their own, the common fear is that they’ll be duped into buying cheap imports or be woefully overcharged.
The new Made In line-up breaks the stereotype, instead showcasing the unusual, the quirky, the hyper-local, and the socially conscious artists, designers, and craftspeople in cities around the globe. Travelers can shop for jewelry that’s been made from old coins by refugees living in Delhi; browse for handmade instruments in Santo Domingo; learn about the different types of Polish ceramics in a Krakow pottery shop; buy handmade quilts from Pennsylvania’s Amish country; discover a Melbourne comic book store where books are hand-drawn on-site; purchase artwork made from recycled metal and designed by disadvantaged locals in Amsterdam; or visit a Jerusalem tattoo shop that’s been in business for over 700 years.
These tours are also the next step in Urban Adventures’ overarching mandate to keep tourism dollars in local economies. With tours that are 100% designed and run by locals, and featuring stops at small, independent businesses, the brand wants to ensure that tourism is as much about enriching the local community as it is about creating memories for travelers. Through the Made In tours, travelers not only get an opportunity to shop for real souvenirs with meaning, but local artists and independent businesses get their work put in front of an audience.
