Hosted by Lesley Judge and Susan Russell of Travel Massive Edinburgh, the event will be facilitated by Joshua Ryan-Saha, Data Driven Innovation Lead for Tourism & Festivals, University of Edinburgh.
We are delighted to welcome our special guest speaker, Vishal Kumar, Cultural Data Scientist at The Bartlett’s Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA) at UCL, and the team behind the new Data for Tourism MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) from Edinburgh Napier University, Professor Jane Ali-Knight and Dr. Ross Tinsley.
Guest Speaker Vishal Kumar: Vishal's talk is called "Data Science for Arts and Culture". He will provide concrete examples of his academic research and how he is using data science techniques in cultural management for cities and governments to measure the economic and social impact of arts and culture in cities. Vishal is a Visiting Associate at the Centre for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP) London based at King’s College London, a visiting lecturer at the Sotheby’s Institute of Art and Christie’s Education, and is a member of the Museums AI Network and Cities of Culture Postgraduate Research Network. He uses a combination of data science and visualization, machine learning and computer vision, urban economics and social media analytics having written several blog posts and co-authored an academic paper.

This second event is a follow-up to our successful first session in January 2019 where attendees helped shape the priorities for the City Region Deal, Data-Driven innovation plan for tourism and festivals.We are keen for this event to be a catalyst for innovative new data projects for the tourism sector, so please join us on the 31st, share the event with colleagues, and be prepared to get started with data!
Who should attend? Those working in tours, visitor attractions, festivals and events, hotels and accommodation, food and drink, mobile and travel tech, those with an interest in data for tourism and/or those already using/managing data for tourism. No tech or data expertise required - all welcome.
