About me

Hi! My name is Michael Taylor, I live in Hong Kong, and I'm a self-described Accidental Travel Writer.

I'm a life-long aviation buff, a helpless foodie, a committed oenophile, and an enthusiastic swimmer, cyclist, and Muay Thai practitioner.

I like to read, study foreign languages, and follow sports.

Look my shoulder as I explore Hong Kong, wander the world, and root for my favourite teams: the Oakland Raiders, the Oakland Athletics, and the Golden State Warriors!

And there's one more thing I like to do: I like to travel! That's why I call myself the Accidental Travel Writer. This all just happened by accident. It wasn't really planned ...

I chronicle my travel experiences, report on travel related news, and review hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, sightseeing attractions, and other travel related products and services in my blog.

In addition to blogging, I have contributed to the following print publications: South China Morning Post (English language daily newspaper in Hong Kong), Asian Hotels and Catering Times, HK Magazine, MIX Magazine, The National (UAE), Silkroad (in flight magazine), The Standard (English language daily newspaper in Hong Kong), Tiger Tales (in-flight magazine), and other publications.

I have visited the following countries: Britain (London), Brazil (Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro, and Salvador), Canada (St John's and Heart's Content, Newfoundland), China (Beijing, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Qingdao, Suzhou, Tianjin, Wuxi, Xiamen, and Xi’an), Croatia (Zagreb and Split), Indonesia (Jakarta and Bali), the Philippines (Cebu), Japan (Aomori, Kyoto, Osaka, Sapporo, Sendai, and Tokyo), Korea (Seoul), Portugal (Coimbra, Faro, Figueira da Foz, Lisbon, and Porto), Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand (Bangkok, Huahin, Koh Samui, Pattaya, and Phuket) Vietnam (Danang, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, and Hue).I have a Master’s Degree in English from San Francisco State University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Chinese Studies from California State University at Eastbay (formerly Hayward).

English is my native tongue. I speak Mandarin and read and write Chinese. In am also proficient in Portuguese.

I was born in Oakland, California. I have also lived in Honolulu, Taipei, New York City, San Francisco, and Macau. I currently reside in Hong Kong.
