McClure won Lowell Thomas Travel Writer of the Year award twice, the highest honor bestowed on North American travel writers; she also is a two-time winner of the University of Missouri Lifestyle Award. She has a master's degree from the University of Southern California and has taught at the University of California and California state universities.
